Nevado Sajama

O Andean peak of awesome height

Your fluted rock, once molten core;

Raised through eons past,

Bespeaks the mighty force

Of restless earth.

Now, capped with mist soon to reveal

Vast snowfields bright in morning sun;

Cirque and wall and icefall too,

With hanging glaciers, aqua-hued,

Which water well the plain below

Where men and herds can live and grow,

With forest rare and grassy lea.

Sajamas will rise and Sajamas will fall,

Yet still exists that Force o’er all;

And when I meet that Force I’ll say;

“Sajamas helped me find my way.”
